Abstract
Introduction: Endophthalmitis is a rare complication of intraocular surgery. Due to its high morbidity and subsequent medical care expenses, post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis is one of public health concern. There are various signs and clinical manifestations of endophthalmitis, which these inflammations contribute to high intraocular pressure. The recommended management of post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis in patients with visual acuity light perception is pars plana vitrectomy (PPV)
Aims: to describe the visual acuity (VA) improvement and the intraocular pressure (IOP) reduce after PPV in post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis patients at Sanglah Hospital Denpasar from 2017-2019.
Methods: This is a retrospective study at Sanglah Hospital Denpasar. The characteristics, VA and IOP before and after PPV data were obtained from medical records, then analyzed using paired t-test and Wilcoxon alternative test.
Results: A total of 13 patients of post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis were treated at Sanglah Hospital Denpasar. Analysis result showed statistically significant VA improvement (2.032 LogMar) and reduced of IOP (6.13 ± 6.78 mmHg) after PPV.
Conclusion: Pars plana vitrectomy can improve visual acuity and reduce the intraocular pressure in patients with post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis, statistically significant.
